What is an End-Grain board?

Wood fibres facing upward. A smoother cut. A board built to last.

End-grain is a construction method where the ends of the wood fibres face upward, revealing the characteristic growth rings on the surface. This creates the distinctive chess-board or mosaic pattern that sets these boards apart.

Unlike flat-grain boards, the knife meets the ends of the fibres - not their surface - making the board kinder to both blade and wood.

Three defining features

  • Growth rings and fibre ends face upward
  • Fibres close after each cut, self-healing the surface
  • Distinctive mosaic pattern - each board is unique

The science of the cut

The moment that explains everything

When your knife meets an end-grain surface, something remarkable happens at a microscopic level.

01

Blade meets fibres

The cutting edge slides between vertically oriented wood fibres, which gently part under pressure.

02

Fibres yield, then return

Vertical fibres flex and spring back - the blade sinks in rather than scraping across.

03

Less resistance, less wear

Reduced friction means less stress on the cutting edge and a noticeably smoother feel.

Think of cutting through a bundle of straws from the top versus scraping across their sides. End-grain is the bundle of straws.

Not just prettier - smarter

The advantages of End-Grain construction

🔪

Slower blade dulling

The knife cuts with the grain direction, dramatically reducing edge wear.

✨

Self-healing surface

Knife marks are barely visible. Fibres compress and return under normal use.

💪

Superior durability

End-grain construction is built for heavy daily use and can last for decades.

🌿

Stability under moisture

Humidity stress is absorbed across neighbouring wood blocks, reducing warping risk with proper care.

The choice of serious cooks

Handcrafted from selected hardwoods

Each board is made by hand from carefully chosen hardwoods - oak, beech, walnut and others - selected for density, stability and beauty. No two boards are identical.

Walnut board

Walnut

Rich, dark tones with exceptional hardness.

Oak board

Oak

Classic golden tones, dense and durable.

Beech board

Beech

Pale, fine-grained and supremely smooth.

Materials & care

What to expect from your board

Food-safe by design

Every board is finished exclusively with food-safe oils and waxes - no varnishes, no synthetics. The surface is natural wood, ready for direct contact with food.

Easy, minimal maintenance

Clean with cool water and mild detergent. Periodic oiling with mineral oil or beeswax blend keeps the wood nourished and beautiful.

✅ Do

  • Rinse with cool water
  • Dry upright after washing
  • Oil regularly
  • Store flat on a dry surface

❌ Don't

  • Soak in water
  • Use a dishwasher
  • Leave wet on both sides
  • Expose to direct heat

Where it all began

Before the end-grain boards, there was fire and resin. Our first products were serving boards burned using the Lichtenberg technique - high-voltage electricity leaving fractal lightning patterns in the wood, then filled with food-certified epoxy resin.
